In the North, Puritans spoke about creaking a "City Upon a Hill," in which the colonies would be a righteous model for the rest of the world. This has become part of the story of the founding of the United States of America, leading the basis for the idea of American exceptionalism, which has been used to indicate that the United States has a special place in the world.
