2. How did the Virginia ruling class drive a wedge between white indentured servants and enslaved blacks? To what extent was the freedom of some (whites) related to the un-freedom of others? Please explain.
3. According to Equiano (especially pg. 1340-1), how were slaves dehumanized during the Middle Passage? To what extent were slaves also dehumanized? Why might Equiano have adopted a childlike or naïve style in his description of the Middle Passage (despite his learnedness)?
4. Much of Equiano's Interesting Narrative focuses on tensions between the author's identity as both African and Englishman, between his position as a 'privileged' free black in a white world.
