Reflections
In this course, you have been exposed to a number of techniques that public administrators may consider using in solving the myriad problems and goals of public organizations. Managers, above all else, are responsible for managing resources and operationalizing public policy decisions in a way that best serves the communities they serve. Each of these management techniques requires that you think creatively about the mission and purpose of your organization, and the resources you have available to you. In some cases, you also have to think about the resources and information you do not have, and how you will acquire those resources.
Your only goal this week is to reflect on what you have learned and consider the benefits and challenges of each of these management techniques.
Discussion: Course Reflection
As the course comes to a close, it is important that you look back on what you have learned. You should do this in every course, as you progress through the program. Your courses should not be seen as single event, but as a cohesive journey. Doing so will make you a better scholar and professional. You can only progress by building on the knowledge and skills you develop along your journey.
For this Discussion, you reflect on your experiences during this course.
To prepare:
Look back and reflect on your course readings, topics, and assignments. Consider the overall impact and utility of the management tools and techniques presented in the course. Reflect on how you might apply the tools and techniques going forward. Consider how you might be able to utilize them as a social change agent.
Post your response to the following questions.
1. What was the single most important technique you learned? Why?
2. What are the benefits and risks associated with using the technique?
3. What will you take into consideration as you apply this technique to your organization?
4. How can these techniques be used to encourage positive social change?
