Assignment:

Background: After something of an interregnum following the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953, Nikita Khrushchev came to power. His leadership of the Soviet Union was, in part, cemented by his denunciation of the terror (and other features) of Stalinist rule. He did so during his so-called Secret Speech, which was delivered at the 20th Party Congress. In the excerpt from another speech at this Congress (the one you read), his focus was on "peaceful coexistence." Appreciate that together, these speeches ushered in a new era in the Soviet Union, as well as throughout the East Bloc, one that would see a precipitous decline in terror, greater freedom for the Communist countries of Eastern Europe to run their own affairs in numerous ways, and the opening up of the Soviet Union to the "outside world" together with a degree of rapprochement with the "West." Questions:

a) What was the policy of peaceful coexistence?

b) How did this differ from pure Marxist ideas about how Communism would come about in the world?

c) How did it differ from Stalin's approach to Communism? (If needed, think back to the material from lecture or the text about the overarching objective of the First Five-Year Plan, for example.)
