Assignment: Understanding the World around You: An Exercise in Developing a Theory
Instructions: Students should answer the questions below in order to conduct a small research study and develop a theory about communication. This is not meant to be intensive research, but rather is intended to give students an understanding of the research process. Students may look at whatever aspect of communication they desire and while they are expected to gather some data in some form, it is not expected that students will complete extensive research. After conducting the research and interpreting the data, students are expected to develop a theory on communication. It is not important as to whether the theory is ultimately correct or even whether you can reach a truly concrete conclusion (again, this is not an in-depth research study that would lead to such a clear conclusion). What is important is going through the process of developing a theory.
A. What important question do you have about how people communicate?
B. What is your specific research question?
C. What are the definitions for the key terms in and relating to the research question?
D. How will you conduct your research (interviews, surveys, observations, an experiment, etc.)?
E. Who are you studying and what are you specifically looking at/for when you study them?
F. What is your data that you have collected?
G. What does your data mean (interpret it)?
H. What theory can you develop based on your data?
