You are a new third grade teacher in a public school. Michael is student in your classroom. He is a quiet boy and is cautious and slow to warm up to people, and often withdraws in social situations. Michael's parents, Margaret and Beth, are a lesbian couple. Even though his parents have attended all of the parent events for the last three years, staff at the school have had very little conversation with them. Staff members seem to have mixed feelings about this couple; however, you have strong feelings about the bias this family may be experiencing in the school. You want to change the atmosphere and make sure the child and his family feel accepted. It is apparent to you that Michael and his parents pick up on the unspoken prejudices.
