Assignment:
Ethical Dilemma: 1
As an early childhood student practitioner, you are asked to work the late shift with your early childhood practitioner mentor. You are looking forward to seeing the process of working with parents at the end of the day and examining the interaction that occurs among the children, parents, and practitioners. On the third day, just before the centre is scheduled to close, the children who are waiting for their parents to come are asked to return to the indoor play area. You and the practitioner are working with the children when, suddenly, as a parent approaches the door to pick up his child, the early childhood practitioner quickly goes to the outdoor play area door. Jamie has been playing out there for about ten minutes without supervision.
Jamie is brought in, and he and his dad leave. The staff member looks visibly upset, but does not verbalize anything until after all of the children have left. Then she says, "We are not going to mention this, because then we don't need to fill out the incident report. Besides, the parent doesn't know that Jamie was outdoors unsupervised."
Questions:
- What is the issue?
- What should the early childhood student practitioner do? Why.
- How could this situation have been handled?
- How could it be prevented another time?
Ethical Dilemma: 2
As a student practitioner, you are not allowed to be left alone with the children in the playroom. For three days in a row, you have been left alone. You spoke with your early childhood practitioner at the centre and indicated that you should not be left alone and she responded by saying "You are good with the children; you are okay to be on your own." You like the centre, and prior to this incident you thought you would seek employment there. You know that your college does not approve of students being left alone. You don't want to get the practicum site in trouble, but you also don't want to engage in practice that violates college policy.
Questions:
- What is the issue?
- What are your options?
- How will you deal with the practicum site?
- How will you deal with your college practicum supervisor?
