Question 1: What Role of both genders is very vital to keeping a balance

Discussion : Phyllis Schlafly thought feminism made women unhappy for several different reasons. To begin, Phyllis was well known in society for multiples roles she played to include mother, lawyer, radio host, author, and columnist. She campaigned against the Equal Rights Amendment from being passed due to the belief that women will lose benefits in society.

  • One of the benefits she mentioned was the loss of financial support from their husbands. Phyllis Schlafly believed that women and men both played specific roles in society and it needed to stay that way in order to maintain a balance of gender. Women are the bearer of children while their husbands provided support to the family. Passing the amendment of equal rights will have sex neutral laws which will include young women also signing up for drafts for example, and she disagreed with having both son and daughter going out there on the battlefield away from their family. Another reason the passing of the amendment would make women unhappy in Phyllis' opinion was the overwhelming of motherly roles along with financial responsibilities.
  • Balancing both roles of taking care of the family and household along with a career seemed unhappy to women. Most people viewed feminism as the success and advancement for women, but Phyllis believed that women lived in a discriminatory and unjust society. Due to these circumstances the only solution was to seek assistance from the government to solve their problems. In my opinion, the main reason as to why Phyllis believed feminism made women unhappy was the denial of men and women enjoying their marriage and career at the same time. Roles of both genders is very vital to keeping a balance.
  • Women were seeking power and equal rights alongside men but straying away from their duties as mothers and wives.
