For the sharecropper, what kinds of benefits and risks were associated with a sharecropping arrangement?

  1. There were basically no benefits, but freedman did not feel that they had much choice.
  2. Since the sharecropper was forced to shop at the company store, the benefits hardly existed at all in the end.
  3. If the crop was good, and they were able to bring it to market, they received half of the proceeds. But if they lost the crop, became ill, or missed work, they could lose all of the value of their work.
  4. There were basically no risks for the sharecropper. If the crop was good, they made money and if they lost it or it was bad they didn't owe anything.
