You have a job interview in Toronto for a very lucrative position in a field that you very much want to work in.Unfortunately the day before the job interview your car breaks down and will require lengthy and expensive repairs. You do not have the funds to rent a vehicle, so you approach a friend who agrees to lend you his car.

As you are driving out of the parking garage after the interview you misjudge the distance around a corner and scrape the passenger side door on the concrete, causing serious damage.

Note: Please ignore insurance in answering this question and explain your answers fully.

1) What responsibility do you have legally for the damage to your friend's vehicle, and why?

2) Would your responsibility be the same if you had rented the car from a car rental business?

3) Would your responsibility be the same as part (i) if you had borrowed your friend's car to pick up his/her drycleaning (and not to go to a job interview)?

4) Would your answer to part (i) be the same if the damage had occurred because an unknown driver had parked too close to the car and scratched the paint with his or her door? If so, how and why would it be different?
