Question A. Consider a probation officer contemplating a decision to seek revocation of a client's probation. What theories might underlie such a decision? What are the goals? What kinds of information should the officer seek? What kinds of feedback might the probation officer want in order to influence later decisions?
Question B. What are some of the biases that would underlie a police officer's discretionary decision whether or not to make an arrest? What biases or beliefs do you possess that would impact your decision to make an arrest or to release the offender?
Question C. Consider ethical issues involved in the day to work of a probation officer. Does his or her discretion come with certain ethical implications? What if the probation officer is a distant relation to the probationer? What policies should probation departments maintain to manage ethical issues?
Question D. Local jails are complex organizations with multiple goals. Consider how you might assess the effectiveness of your local jail. What internal and external constituencies exist? How might their views of effectiveness differ from that of the jail administration?
Question E. Assess the organizational effectiveness implications of mandatory sentencing laws and the "get tough" approach to law enforcement. Show how these measures have impacted policing, the courts and, in particular, corrections. Use the principles of organizational effectiveness to support or oppose such laws. What changes would you support to offset the problems associated with the toughened measures?
Question F. Develop a definition of organizational effectiveness and explain it in your terms.
