During a well-child exam for Jimmy, an 18-month-old, you notice that he is playing with the window blinds, pushing them slightly, and then watching them sway back and forth. He avoids eye contact, flaps his hands in excitement, and only says a few words. His mother is concerned that he may have autism. There are two other family members on the mother's side who were diagnosed with mental retardation during early childhood. What more should you know about the family history?
