A farmer requires two steel silos to store wheat. Each silo is 8 m in external diameter and 10 m high. The foundation for each silo is a circular concrete slab thickened at the edge. The total load of each silo filled with wheat is 9552 kN. The soil consists of a 30 m thick deposit of medium clay above a deep deposit of very stiff clay. The farmer desires that the silos be a distance of 2 m apart and hires you to recommend whether this distance is satisfactory. The area is subjected to a gust wind speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
(a) Plot the distribution of vertical stress increase at the edges and at the center of one of the silos up to a depth of 16 m. Assume the soft clay layer is semi-infinite and the concrete slab is flexible. Use a spreadsheet to tabulate and plot your results.
(b) Calculate the elastic settlement at the surface of one of the silos at the edges and at the center, assuming E = 30 MPa and v = 0.7.
(c) Calculate the elastic tilt of the foundation of one of the silos and sketch the deformed shape of the foundation slab.
(d) Would the tops of the silos touch each other based on the elastic tilt? Show calculations in support of your answer.
(e) What minimum separation distance would you recommend? Make clear sketches to explain your recommendation to the owner.
(f) Explain how the wind would alter the stress distribution below the silos. (Hint: Use the charts in Appendix B.)
If an additional 11ft lane is added (each direction) and all other factors stay the same, what will be the new level of service?
An activated sludge process receives 4000m^3 / day containing 120 mg BOD /L from the primary settling tank and 3500 m^3/day Containing 25mg BOD/L from the secondary settling tank.

A cyclone has been designed with an inlet width of 10cm and an inlet height of 6cm. The height of the main upper cylinder is 16cm and the height of the lower cone is 16cm. The inlet gas velocity is 16m/s and the particle density
water flows at a velocity of 25 ft/s at a depth in a rectangular channel 16 feet wide. Determine the downstream depth necessary to form a hydraulic jump, the head loss through the jump and the horsepower dissipated in the jump.
A sphere L ft in diameter is moving horizontally at a depth of 12 ft below a water surface where the water temperature is 50°F. v max = 1.5 V0. where V0. is the free stream velocity and occurs at the maximum sphere width.
Estimate the force on the chimney and the bending moment at the bottom of the chimney. You may assume that the effect of the wind on the first 1 m height of the chimney has a negligible effect on the force and the moment.
A bridge has cylindrical piers 1 m in diameter and spaced 15 m apart. Downstream of the bridge where the flow disturbance from the piers is no longer present, the flow depth is 2.9 m and the mean velocity is 2.5 m/s.
