Assignment:

POTENTIAL TOPIC 1: What do you think are the most important elements of the development of the global system? Why?

In more detail: we start this course looking at the history of the development of the global system, yet it's worth considering more about the causes and effects of the global system as it has developed historically: who/what/where has been involved, who has benefitted (or lost out), how has the global system changed, or not, over time? What do you think we can learn from this/should be aware about this?

For this potential topic you might want to consider (but don't have to!):

  • What makes a "global system?"
  • How has the global system changed over time? Why has it changed?
  • What is the modern/ongoing impact of the global system and how/why does that shape people's lives and/or world events today?

POTENTIAL TOPIC 2: Would you characterize "globalization" as historically having a more positive or more negative impact? (See 1.4 Week 1 Global Studies Exercise)

For this potential topic you might want to consider (but don't have to!):

  • Differing impacts in different parts of the world on different peoples.
  • What impacts/effects are specifically caused by "globalization" as opposed to other structures/factors?
  • Consider how globalization is connected to other things and the impacts of those connections.
