Guidelines for Writing The "7 Habits" Critical Commentary

About a Critical Commentary - the following has been adapted from:
Macquarie University (1999). PHYS243/SOC244: Critical Commentary Guide. Retrieved March 30, 2010

A commentary upon a text is a piece of writing which identifies the key points in an argument and discusses their significance. A critical commentary is one which highlights strengths and weaknesses in the argument or extends the argument in new directions.

In writing your critical commentary, you might like to go through the following steps:

1. Understanding the text as a whole
• One approach is to use a highlighter pen to accent the key ideas in the text. Another is to take a bit more time and write summary notes as you read the article. In writing a summary, you not only assimilate the ideas more easily but you also get a clearer picture of the structure of the argument.

2. Analyzing the nature of the argument
• Once you have gained an overall idea of the article, your next step is to go back and analyse the nature of the writers' argument. Armed with the following questions, go back to the article and note down your responses:

• What is the purpose of the article?

• Does the writer have an adversary in her or his sights? If so, what are the opposing points of view?

• What line of argument is the writer advancing? What are the key points in the argument?

• What evidence or examples does the writer use to support his or her argument?

• What are the underlying assumptions within the argument?

• Am I convinced by the writer's argument and the manner in which she/he has supported her/his claims? Do I disagree with the underlying assumptions, with the logic of the argument, with the nature of the evidence presented, or with the social and political implications of the analysis? Can I suggest ways in which the argument might be strengthened?
