Health Canada sets the guidelines for cholesterol levels: According to the Health Canada, the mean total cholesterol for adults between the ages of 40 and 59 is 3.9 millimoles per litre (mmol/L) with a standard deviation of 1.4. A cutoff value for having dangerously high cholesterol levels is set at the top 4.95% of cholesterol scores. A cutoff value of having borderline high cholesterol levels is set at the top 17.36% of cholesterol scores.
