Assignment:

What is the value of studying history? Is something happened long ago relevant for now? The answer is that history is inescapable. History matters for today's intercultural communication. We live in the continuation of the past. For example, we speak languages inherited from the past. We live in societies with complex cultures, traditions and religions created by people decades, hundreds and thousands of years ago. Each of you is born with a unique variant of the genome, evolved during the life-span of the human species.

Understanding the linkages between past and present is absolutely basic for you to become an effective communicator. Through studying history, we can become more mindful of the background of cultural others. History provides the lessons for us to repeat success and avoid mistakes when communicating with a diverse group of people in this globalized world. To start with, you need to identify and avoid offensive terms, then explain who they would offend and why. These terms carry the burdens of history regarding unfair treatment to certain groups of people.

Note: You can not use the word "colored".
