For this assignment, you will be required to read the following prompt and chart and answer the questions that follow.

Yahoo Widgets, Inc. (YWI) is a widget manufacturer in Williamsburg, Virginia. YWI receives raw material sheets of plastic from Tribe Plastics, once per week, on Monday, for the family of widget models it produces. These widgets are then shipped to another manufacturer, Acme Gadgets, Inc. (AGI), for inclusion in its family of gadgets, which are sold to end users. For its new product line, the gadget manufacturer requires two types of widgets, large and small, that are packaged in returnable trays holding 55 widgets for shipment. The trays are returned, empty, to YWI after the widgets are used by AGI. The manufacturing process consists of a thermoforming activity that transforms the sheets of plastic into a "rough" widget, which requires a drilling process step and a grinding and sanding process step before the packing and shipping process step. These steps and related information are shown in the following table.

Process Characteristics

Hello I have a couple questions about the M6 individual assignment.. I do not understand how to calculate the timeline bar at the bottom of the VSM and there is no explanation for this in the class materials. Assuming that we are doing the VSM for a single item: The value added time is the cycle time for the process step. The non-value added time is the time between the end of production in one process step and the start of the next process step divided by the batch size. Lead time is defined as the time between the order and delivery for a process or set of processes. Lead time for all the process steps is all the numbers in the saw tooth added together. For Production Lead Time for Each Process Step. how do we calculate that? It would be the sum of the value added time and non value added time for that process step.

• What does WIP stand for? (work in progress?) • When calculating production time. should we assume that each operator is not dependent on another operator within that task area? For example, there are two operators in step 1. would I calculate production time then multiple by two or divide by two ? • What does Every Part Every Week mean in the step? • Do you have any sources for calculating production time below each of the data boxes? I cannot find any examples in the book or on the books website. • What does WIP stand for? There is a case scenario with a table with the specific data and in this assignment you have to answer the following questions: 1. Using the data shown in the table above. construct a value stream map for yahoo Widgets. Inc. 2. What is the takt time of the manufacturing cell? 3. What is the production lead time for each process step? 4. What is the total processing time for the manufacturing cell? 5. What is the total capacity of the manufacturing cell? Here is a good reference on cycle time - takt time and lead time

MI would issue orders to Tribe Plastics. This is the supplier step. It doesn't change the calculations. but dots help complete the VSM. These are steps to create a VSM - although you may also use the Excel template in the classroom 1. Begin with symbols for customer, supplier. and production to ensure the big picture 2. Enter customer order requirements 3. Calculate the daily production requirements 4. Enter the outbound shipping requirement and delivery frequency 5. Determine inbound shipping method and delivery frequency 6. Add the process steps (i.c machine. assemble) in sequence. left to right 7. Add communication methods. add their frequency. and shoe the direction with arrows 8. Add inventory quantities between every step of the entire flow 9. Determine total working time (value added time) and delay (non•value added time)

Additionally. I am having trouble figuring out how Tribe Plastics comes into the model. Since YWI receives raw material sheets of plastic from Tribe Plastics. once per week. would they receive demand information from YWI or the customer? Would this company come before the supplier step? Or would production control communicate the requirement to them daily. and they deliver weekly? I do not understand how this factors into the calculations either.

1. The data I have given you should be sufficient for the VSM. 2. No process improvements are required. 3. Yes. similar to Exhibit 12.2 4. Takt time is the available production time divided by customer demand. For example. if a widget factory operates 480 minutes per day and customers demand 240 widgets per day. takt time is two minutes. 5. Lead time is the amount of time that elapses between when a process starts and when it is completed. 6. Total processing time would be the production quantity needed • the cycle time. 7. Capacity would be the number they could produce in a day. usually the slowest process puts an upper bound on the total capacity.

Requirement attached with explanation requirement and supporting docs Q&A.The Value Stream Mapping template is attached. Here are some Questions and Answers past students have had about the assignment: I am working on this week's individual assignment and want to ensure I am understanding it correctly. You ask us to develop a value stream map for Yahoo Widgets. Inc. 1. Are we supposed to use only the data that you have given us? 2. Do we have to identify where process improvements can be made? 3. So this should be based off of exhibit 12.2 in the book? 4. Identify the current takt time. 5. Production lead time for each process step. 6. Total processing time for the manufacturing cell. 7. Total capacity of the manufacturing cell?
