Question 1. Data points from a standard moisture-density test on a fine-grained soil are given in the following table:
Water Content Total Density
(%) ONO
20.0 99.6
23.1 105.9
25.6 111.2
28.5 115.1
31.3 113.4
34.0 1115
Reduce the data and plot the water content versus dry density curve. Clearly indicate val-ues for optimum water content and maximum dry density from this test.
Question 2. For the soil described in Problem I, assume that a field density test on a fill lift indicates a water content and dry density of 23.2 percent and 88.6 pcf, respectively. Would specifica-tions calling for a minimum relative compaction of 96 percent of standard maximum dry density and a water content 62 percent of optimum be satisfied?
Question 3. A subsurface exploration report shows that the average water content of a fine-grained soil in a proposed borrow area is 22 percent and that its average natural dry density is 82 pcf. This soil is to be placed in a compacted fill with a dry density specified at 96 pcf. How many cubic yards of borrow will be required to produce 50,000 yd3 of fill? What is the shrinkage factor for the borrow?
