A treatment plant has two primary clarifiers, each with a depth of 5 in and with a combined volume of 5,000 m3 . The clarifiers were designed to have a detention time greater than or equal to 2 h.

(a) What is the maximum flow the plant is designed to accept based upon the design detention time?

(b) What is the minimum settling velocity (in units of m s-1 ) required so that 100% of the particles entering the chamber are removed? (Particle density is 2,000 kg m-3, liquid density is 1,000 kg m-3, particle diameter is 0.0001 m, and liquid viscosity is 0.01 kg m-1 s-1 .)
