Assignment: Farm Bill Policy Brief
Background:
One of the more indirect ways that we interact with natural resources management in society is through policymaking; policy creates programs to fund natural resources management, creates rules to dictate management, allocates funding for different resources, and much more. Policy may seem very abstract, but it is a foundation of what we do every day. A policy brief is essentially describing a problem and recommending one or multiple solutions; intended to be read quickly by a non-specialist audience (aka a policy maker). For the purposes of this assignment, you will be creating a policy brief on the Farm Bill; that is, you will pick a specific policy proposal within the scope of the Farm Bill and creating a succinct and compelling reason as to why the policy maker in question-in this example of the Farm Bill, a congress person-they should adopt your policy request.
Instructions:
In two pages, you will cover the following:
A. Introduction of the policy proposal and context: i.e. a concise summary on the background on Farm Bill and specific program/policy you have chosen
B. Issue: What is the issue that the Farm Bill and the specific policy in question is solving and what reputable sources back up this issue? (Use endnotes in APA formatting for citations - Microsoft Word has a function for this, it's amazing!)
C. Solution: How does the policy/program you have chosen solve for the issue you presented? And what are you advocating for? Three potential avenues:
a. Include (policy/program) again and continue funding (your solution)/a specific program in this next cycle; at same amount or higher?
b. Amend an existing program policy to include something else; or
c. Eliminate a specific program
D. Supporters: What real (nongovernmental) groups do you know or imagine would support this policy proposal? Include a list to give the policymaker a full picture of allies. This can be a bulleted list
