Research and provide answers for the following topics and terms.
Between the beginning of George Washington's Federalist presidency in 1789, and the bloodless transfer of political power to the Democratic-Republicans under Thomas Jefferson in 1800, the greatest problem faced by the young United States was foreign relations with Britain and France.
Issues and events that occurred during the administrations of Washington and John Adams were discussed in Worksheet 4. Unfortunately, the French Revolution and war with Britain did not stop with Jefferson's election. The final segment of that European conflict - the Napoleonic Wars - erupted again between 1803 and 1815, and was responsible for another war between Britain and the United States known as The War of 1812. This worksheet deals with the causes and consequences of the War of 1812, and the resulting change in American political thinking. Do not waste time researching the actual events of the war itself. Concentrate on the events that led to the war, and what the impact was on US political parties in the aftermath.
1. The War of 1812 was called "Mr. Madison's War" by his contemporaries and many modern historians because he was the 4th president of the US from 1808 to 1816. What does that phrase mean in relation to the US foreign policy decisions Madison inherited from Thomas Jefferson? Describe the foreign policy of Jefferson and Madison, with examples of actions taken in support of this policy. Was Madison outmaneuvered by Napoleon in regard to the war?
2. Who were the "war hawks" and what reasons did they have for promoting a war between the US and Britain?
3. What is the Hartford Convention, and why is it described as ‘the end of the Federalist Party?" Who were its participants and why was it held? What list of demands was generated from this meeting?
4. What new American leader was identified to the American people as a result of the war? Did Madison's political philosophy change or remain the same after the war ended?
