What is religion, and what should its purpose be in society? Does religion need a god and faith to exist? What elements must a belief system include to be considered a religion? Is atheism a religion? Is science? What about humanism? These are questions that most likely will stir emotions within you as you think about them. In this discuss and debate, be prepared to back up your claims with evidence from your readings and the Exploration page. Instructions

Research the belief systems and other elements of two of the world's largest religions (e.g., Judaism, Hinduism, Islam) and two functionally equivalent belief systems to better understand the similarities and differences that comprise each. Be sure to check out this module's Exploration page for resources on world religions.

After you have completed your reading and research, develop a post (minimum of 150 words) that addresses the following questions:

1. What is religion?
2. Does religion need a god or belief to be legitimate?
3. What role or purpose should religion play in society?
4. In your answer, use Durkheim to describe the three elements of religion and examples of the "sacred" and "profane". Discuss the specific functions of religion.
