Nicholas is the CEO of Profitable Invention Limited ("Profitable"). The company develops new inventions but most of them are not profitable. The one invention which was successful was a fabric with nanosilver particles that makes the textile odour-free, but it was soon copied by competitors.

Nicholas has a new invention - a specially-formulated ink which is environmentally friendly - and he is excited about this product. He has asked you whether he has any right over the invention and if so, how he can protect his right commercially and for his lifetime.

Required:

(a) Explain to Nicholas what is meant by intellectual property right and how this right is protected in Hong Kong.

(b) What procedures must be followed in order to protect Nicholas' property rights over his latest invention?
