Assignment Topic- COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA
About this Assignment:
We have finished the first section of the course! Each time we finish a section we will reflect on it by completing an assignment that incorporates the themes from the unit. In this case you will investigate the strategies of successful brands and then apply them to a failing brand.
You will present your research in a narrated PowerPoint (or any other slide program.) You can record a narrated screencast using Screencastomatic, Jing, or other similar software program. Each has free versions. Although SPS recommends Screencastomatic it can be cumbersome to use. Any way you chose to narrate your slide presentation is fine with me. You do not need to have video of yourself in the screencast, it can just be audio.
Visit the content area in Blackboard 'Screencasting' for more information and help on using Screencastomatic.
When you finish your screencast post it to youtube or any other video hosting site and send me the link.
Submit:
1. Your Screencast should be between 2-4 minutes long.
2. Pick one successful brand (You can think big like Coke - or smaller like Lime) and then something that is failing like Sears or ToysRus.
(These assignments are intended for you to be creative. Have fun with them. A quick google search will provide you with many failing/bankrupt companies.)
3. Using a similar strategy to the assignment in week #1 do some ownership history on both companies. Have they been recently acquired by another company? Do they own other brands? What is the story of their success/failure?
4. What is each company's branding strategy? What audience are they targeting.?
5. Diagnose the brands. Why do you think the strong brand is doing well? Why do you think th weak brand is failing?
6. What lessons can the weaker brand learn from the stronger brand? If you were a public relations manager what kind of branding strategy would you suggest for the weaker company? How would you save them?
7. How do you think government regulation could help/hurt both the weaker and stronger brands?
8. Please cite any sources you used in APA style in the final PP slide.
