Punishing the Three Drunks? - Retribution Three neighbors get drunk at a bar. Each takes the same route home but 15 minutes after the one before them. The first drive home without incident, except that a police officer happens to pull him over right next to his home on a random check and arrests him for drunk driving. Shortly after the first man is arrested, it begins to rain. The second drive home skids off the wet road during a sharp corner into a telephone pole, where police find him and arrest him for drunk driving. The third drive home and skids at the same wet sharp corner but, due to bad luck or timing, hits a family of four head- on and is killed. The third man is arrested for drunk driving (and four counts of manslaughter). You, a retributionist, are assigned to determine the deserved punishments for each man. Each of the three intended to drive home drunk, but due to rain and lousy timing, the results of each drunk driving attempt varied widely.
1. What is the deserved punishment for each of the men? Provide specific criminal offenses.
2. Why should the state have a monopoly on punishment?
3. Does retribution go too far, be specific about whether you agree or disagree with this statement.
