Problem
I. Think about your workplace problem. What is a likely context where this problem occurs? For example, if you're looking at harassment of restaurant wait staff, it might take place in a Jack Astor's in downtown Toronto. If you're looking at racist hiring practices, you could choose any organization where such practices might occur (a law firm, a media company, a small business, etc.)
II. Your purpose in writing your letter is to persuade your audience that your chosen issue is important and worthy of attention and action. Based on the preliminary research you've done on this topic, what details, evidence, and examples will you want to include to help persuade the audience that the issue is important?
III. Another part of your purpose is to ask your reader to adopt a solution that you propose based on your research. What concrete solution will you request from your audience? Aim to make your recommended solution (i) based on research and (ii) specific, relevant, and actionable.
IV. Your audience for this assignment should be a person who is in the position to put your request into action. This might be a union representative, manager, HR representative, or appropriate government official (ie. Minister of Labour). The person you choose may depend on the industry, the problem, and the solution that you've chosen. For example, your manager can't change government policy. If you're asking for a policy change, you'll need to write to a politician, not your manager. Who is your chosen audience? Describe their role and why they will be able to act on this request. You can make up the name of the person but it should be tied to real world roles in organizations.
