Part One: Define the role of the dramaturg

What is a dramaturg? Why are they important to a theatrical production?

Part Two: What play have you chosen and why?

Pick one of the plays we studied in this course, or a different play from this era. Why have you selected this play? What appeals to you about it? The characters, theme, plot, etc.?

Part Three: Examine the play in its context

Provide some background information on this play. Why is it important? How does it represent or challenge issues of power, gender, identity of religion of its time? Was it an important play in its time?

Part Four: Performance History

Compile a short production history of this play. Try to find 3-4 different productions of the play that show how it has been interpreted in Theatre history. Look to digitaltheatre +, google, youtube. Try to find productions from a wide range of dates and years. Consider if interpretations and understanding of this play have changed over time. If so how and why?

Part Five: How does it relate to contemporary Theatre and society?

Does this play have meaning to a contemporary audience? If so, what? Analyze if its depictions of power, gender, identify, religion speak to issues in today's society.

Conclusion:

How have your thoughts about this play changed through your research? What were the exciting aspects that you discovered?
