Ethics Writing Assignment

You work as a sales agent for the financial services firm WGC, Inc. While 2008 was a down year for the company as a whole, and in fact bankruptcy is a real possibility in the coming fiscal year, you and your colleagues performed in the top 1% of the company nationwide. As a result, you were promised an all-expenses-paid cruise through the Mediterranean.

You and your colleagues are excited but also starting to have some concerns about the trip. The company is not doing well, and the news is full of stories of corporations receiving bad press for sending executives and sales agents on similar "once-in-a-lifetime" trips.

Today you received an email from your boss asking whether you think it is a good idea for the company to honor its commitment to the trip. You must respond to your boss with a recommendation. At this point, you have two options -- inform your boss that you think the trip should be held, or inform your boss that you think the trip should be canceled.

In a business letter addressed to your boss, inform him of your recommendation on the cruise through the Mediterranean. As you formulate your recommendation, include answers to the questions below. These points need to be addressed to receive credit.

(1) What are the benefits and drawbacks of providing incentives to employees in the form of "once-in-a-lifetime" events like this one?

(2) What management concepts and theories are relevant to this situation?

(3) What general ethical principles are relevant in this situation? How are these principles relevant?
