Assignment: A Deeper Dive on Sustainability Strategy and Metrics - Homework
Note: Enter which organization you picked down below - ideally everyone should try to pick an organization that is different .
Pick any organization that files with the Global Reporting Inititative or with the Carbon Disclosure Project, or both. Now dig! For example, to get a sense of what the GRI asks for from organizations, click on the "GRI Standards". To get the information you need, you should sign up for both of these data clearinghouse organizations. It takes about 15 seconds in each case.
Dig around for their most recent filings in one or both of these reporting clearinghouses. For example, here is Intel in the CDP for 2018 on carbon emissions (requires password). On top of this, go to the website of the company (or Google) and dig around for any sustainability reporting/ reports that they do independent of or in parallel with their GRI/ CDP reporting.
You should keep Porter and Kramer, NR, MCS, etc in mind as you dig in - remembering analytics and tools that we have been exposed to in your reading and/ or in class.
When it comes to sustainability, is this company being strategic, in your view? Is there a clear mission? Do they have a reasonable focus? Why, or why not? What issues are they focusing on? (How are they portraying their approach to sustainability?) Is there anything obvious that they are NOT focusing on (perhaps intentionally)?
What are the analytics that this organization is using in their reporting and/ or their answers to disclosure requirements? How do they say they prioritized sustainability goals and metrics? (For example, do they reveal a "materiality" analysis in any of their reporting or something like it?).
Who are this organizations stakeholders? Is it clear? How does the organization discuss them and/ or report them?
What are the environmental issues and impacts this company is focusing on? Be specific, drawing from your online research and the GRI/CDP as appropriate. Be ready to detail how they are measuring impacts. Are they leaving some reporting for environmental metrics (see GRI for a clue) out - or is their reporting extensive?
What are the social issues and impacts this company is focusing on? Be specific, drawing from your online research and the GRI/CDP as appropriate. Be ready to detail how they are measuring impacts related to the social sphere. Are they leaving some reporting for social metrics (see GRI for a clue) out - or is their reporting extensive?
How would you characterize this organization overall in the "journey" towards sustainability? Do you think firm actors have set themselves up for success as they try to continuously improve going forward? Do you see evidence that the organization has built a culture of sustainability and an appropriate work environment that will ensure success? If you were to "benchmark" the organization, how do you think you would characterize it: behind, even with, or in front of its competitors? What do you think will happen in the long run to this organization?
You can screenshoot diagrams and tables and put them in the document. Be ready to show your group the sections of any reporting that you find compelling.
