Problem: David Christian calls agrarian states a "civilized compromise." But in chapters 2-5 of Against the Grain, James Scott presents a highly critical account of agrarian states. Using our course material from this unit, including in particular the evidence from our "Five Empires" exercise, assess the validity of Scott's claims. About 1000 words. General guidance: This is not a request for a summary of Scott. Your task is to quickly identify his most important critical claims, and examine whether they hold up. It is possible that some of his claims do not hold up. Please note the words "highly critical" in the question, and the contrast between Scott and Christian. This is not a question about claims they agree on (for example both agree that agrarian states taxed farmers), or about simple physical facts, for example that farmers domesticated animals. Go back to the "civilized compromise" which the question highlights. Were agrarian states a good deal for the majority of their populations? What does your evidence say?
