Analyzing Photographs
Part 1: Denotative (factual) analysis:
In Part 1, you will be asked to just describe on a denotative (or factual) level what you see in the photographs (objects, people, action or static shot, etc.).
Examine each photograph and discuss the following:
The camera angle (e.g., long shot, close-up shot, tilt up, tilt down)
The contents or objects, figures or people, and the environment in the photograph
Whether the photograph depicts an action or a static shot
(Pick at least 4 photographs!!!)
Part 2: Connotative (emotional) analysis:
In Part 2, you are to analyze the connotative (emotional) impressions that the photographs evoke. Examine photographs a second time and discuss the following:
1) Signs or symbols in the photograph: what reaction do these signs or symbols inspire in you about the photograph?
2) What does the camera angle determine to be the photograph's main subject?
3) What emotions do you see expressed in the photograph? What emotions does the photograph create in you?
Prepare to discuss the following debriefing questions:
4) How did the two parts of your analysis generate different understanding of the images? Which part did you find easier to conduct and why?
5) Which photograph do you feel best encapsulates the story of 9/11? Explain.
6) Which photograph made the greatest impression on you?
