Lastly, why do you think it's important to consider the history of the Americas before 1492 as part of U.S. history?

What was something interesting that you learned from the textbook chapter? What motivations lay behind European colonialism in the Americas? Particularly, what role did the Portuguese and Spanish play in facilitating European colonialism in the Americas? How and why did the British initially get involved in the Americas and what made them different from the Spanish?

3. Chapter 3: "Colonization and Conflict in the South" by Davidson et al.

What was something interesting that you learned from the textbook chapter? What factors prompted European (particularly English and Spanish) settlement of North America and the founding of new colonies? What did the early days of settlement in Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, and Georgia look like? What explains the development of chattel slavery in the English colonies and what did this slavery look like?
