Assignment:

  1. According to Kimberle Crenshaw, what does intersectionality mean and why does it matter?
  2. How does the theoretical framework of intersectionality add to your understanding of the 19th century abolitionist and feminist movements? Cite two examples from either the module's readings, lecture, or videos.
  3. Summarize the strengths and weaknesses of the reform movements of the 19th century.

Ray B. Browne, the leading scholar and founder of American popular culture studies, defines popular culture as:

"The way of life in which and by which most people in any society live. In a democracy like the United States it is the voice of the people-their likes and dislikes, their habits and attitudes-the lifeblood of their daily existence, their way of life. The popular culture is the democracy, democracy speaking and acting, the seedbed in which political and cultural qualities grow. Popular culture democratizes society and makes democracy truly democratic. It is the everyday world around us: the mass media, entertainments, diversions; it is our heroes, icons, rituals, everyday actions, psychology, politics, and religion-our total life picture. It is the way of life we inherit, practice, modify as we please and then pass on to our descendants. It is what we do while we are awake and how we do it; it is the dream we dream while asleep."

  1. Given the fraught history of American music, to what extent does the story of "The Birth of American Music" fit into Browne's definition of popular culture as "democracy speaking and acting, the seedbed in which political and cultural qualities grow"?
  2. Music critic Wesley Morris argues that the birth of American popular culture began the night Jim Crow (the blackface minstrel act) was introduced to a mass audience. Explain how he makes this argument in the episode.
  3. How do the primary sources from the module support Morris' argument? Cite two examples.
  4. How does understanding the origins of American music help us understand the history of the United States?
