Assignment:
Dealing with People Who Make Your Life Difficult
Read the following statement from Steve Wright, a shipping department employee:
Nancy seemed really pleasant and nice when she interviewed for the job. She knew what was expected and was aware that the job was physically and mentally demanding at times. Most of the time she gets her work done, but it's the baggage that comes with her that annoys me. Nancy brings her personal life to work. I see that in her daily conversations with me. Every day, I hear about her out-of-work husband, her lazy kids, and how she has to be superwoman at home and at work. On top of that, every time the supervisor asks her to do something, she comes to me to tell me what a hard, nasty, hot job has been assigned to her. Every day is another poor, miserable, everything-bad-always-happens-to-me story. Nothing good ever happens to her. She never has a good day at work. Every day is the worst day of her life---much worse than yesterday.
Nancy's whining is like a cancer in the department. No one in the group wants to work with her on any quality or methods-improvement projects. When she's in a really bad mood, everyone avoids her. I've learned to deal with her by developing a positive mental attitude and smiling. I suspect this probably aggravates her more, but she leaves my work area and looks for another shoulder to whine on.
Nancy exhibits a negative attitude with a tendency to not do the work that needs to be done. Early on, I felt sorry for her predicament, but it is wearing on all of us. She impedes everyone's performance. I'm running out of sympathy for her.
