1. We do not often realize it but we are constantly using statistical analysis. Drawing graphs and charts, calculating averages and other metrics is what is done most of the time but things like probability analysis and inferential tests may also be done.

How do you use statistical analysis in your work or even home life? Please give examples of how you use it or, if you do not think you use it, how it is used in your work place.

2. Explain and how to apply ,the difference between variables, measurement, and data.

3. Compare the four different levels of data: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio.

4. Describe a data distribution statistically and graphically using skewness, kurtosis, and box-and-whisker plots.

5. The average person in the United States produces 1609 pounds of trash per year. What additional information could be gleaned by also knowing a measure of variability on these data (pounds of trash)?

6. On average, one American uses seven trees a year in products. What different information might a median yield on these data, and how might it help decision makers?

7. Descriptive statistics is the branch of quantitative analysis that uses numerical metrics to describe a data set so that we can realize the information in that data. There are a wide variety of these numerical tools measuring what is called central tendency, dispersion and shape. (See my helps aids post for the range of these tools.)

Describe and discuss why there are so many of these metrics. Do you use any of these in your work?

8. Discussion Topic #2 looked at descriptive statistics. It is very important and for most of you, the branch you will use most often. But there is a second branch known as inferential statistics which looks at a sample and tries to estimate from that sample (infer) the characteristics of the population from which that sample was drawn.

The tools of inferential statistics are based on the laws of probability and are very important to understand. So, what do you know about probability?

Do you see the concepts of probability used in your workplace or even your home (quick answer - you sure do)? How do you see the concepts of probability being used?
