Learning Activity 4.5 Land use in Beaconsfield Land use in Beaconsfield

RESIDENTIAL

Beaconsfield has seen an increase in housing developments throughout the city. Instead of expanding within the current city boundaries, Beaconsfield is spreading its growth and building on the outskirts of the city and taking over open spaces. Many question these building practices, as the population of the city is not increasing, the unemployment rate is increasing, and many people who live in the city are not seeking single-family homes, as they are mostly single professionals who prefer to live in the downtown core. What problems do you see with the residential land use? (at least 2) What could Beaconsfield do to fix the problems?

TRANSPORTATION

Beaconsfield's transportation network is poor overall. The only options for transit are personal vehicles or the public transit bus system. The public transit bus system primarily serves the east and south ends of the city. In addition, for personal vehicles, there are only two main routes into the city - from the north and east ends. If you are travelling into the city from the south or west ends, your only options are to take gravel roads in or travel to the north or east ends to enter via a major transportation route. Finally, the downtown core has no bike lanes. What problems do you see with the transportation land use? (at least 2)
