Question: From the readings for this week, consider how individuals and groups confronted the enormous changes that came with the American Revolution and its aftermath. Think about how people used the moment to evaluate their place in the American system (such as Phillis Wheatley and Benjamin Banneker), to challenge the system (such as the slaves' petition), or confront the contradictions of the idea of "Liberty" (such as the calls for abolition). Then, using evidence from the readings; (Lord Dunmore`s Proclamation, 1775), (Slaves petition for freedom to the Massachusetts legislature, 1777), and (To Thomas Jefferson from Benjamin Banneker, 19 August 1791).
