Assignment:
Gass & Seiter suggest that "our attitudes are interrelated" and "exist in associative networks" (p. 54). One strategy that persuaders may use is to associate their message (idea, product, etc.) with our favorable or unfavorable attitudes. Below you will find three, different, short television advertisements. In the questions that follow, you are asked to apply concepts and applications from the readings in developing your answer. Please note that the questions refer to a specific section in Gass and Seiter. You should develop your answers in such a way that you clearly indicate you understood that part of the reading.
I look for two components in your answers. Does your response to the question reflect that you read and understood the material? Does your response represent a sophisticated analysis of the issues presented in each question? Because no two questions are the same, it is not reasonable to list a minimum number of words. However, in most instance the minimum expectation for each question is at least one to two detailed paragraphs.
These advertisements were chosen for a reason--the intent is that you have not seen them before. In your answers to the questions, please be sure to use the (1), (2), etc. to organize your answers.
Select one of the following advertisements and:
(1) Point out how the advertisement attempts to persuade the viewer using associations.
(2) What images and content are being associated by the advertisement?
(3) Based on what you observed in the advertisement, what do you think is the goal (or goals) of the advertisement (e.g., based on what you viewed, what was the "purpose" of advertisement--for instance, was it to specifically purchase a product)?
(4) Do you think association(s) in advertisements like these are intended to "make sense" or be "logical?" Why or why not?
(5) In the case of the advertisement you selected, do you think it the association is logical? Why or why not?
