A good friend has approached you with a difficult decision - his 85-year old father is in the last stages of a terminal illness, and the medication he is taking is not controlling the excruciating pain he experiences. Your friend tells you that his father has asked for help in dying, and your friend is torn between the anguish of watching his father suffer to death and his moral reluctance to provide any assistance that may facilitate his death. He asks for your opinion in deciding what he could do. Take a completely objective perspective on this issue and discuss under what circumstances euthanasia may be appropriate and when it might not be appropriate.
