History of Modern Design:

Assignment-

This assignment explores characteristics of Modernism in design, as discussed in class, in a historical context, through articles discussing Fashion, Interior, Industrial and Communication (Graphic) design.

Using the other attached document ("113 Modernism Notes"), where the list of 7 key traits of Modernism are found (numbered, in bold), go to each of the internet addresses below, read the article found there, and answer the related questions. Type up or neatly handwrite your answers on one sheet of 8½ x 11 paper. The paper will be turned in on Wednesday in your discussion section.

1. Go to: visforvintage - modernism

[note: this address may give you a list of articles rather than only the one you want, "Modernism"; if that happens, the first article on the list that appears should be "Modernism" at the v is for vintage site.]

Read the article (unfortunately it's not well written or organized, but is useful for our purposes), and answer questions a) and b) below:

a) Looking at the "113 Modernism Notes" page I attached, which of the 7 numbered characteristics listed (in bold) are most related to what the author says are Modernist traits in the first and second sections (first paragraphs and "What Is the Modernist Style" section)? Explain why you chose those characteristics from the list.

b) Choose two of the Modernist characteristics from the same notes list that are most related or similar to the characteristics of Modernism in fashion discussed in the last two sections of the article; explain how they relate.

2. architectureweek

a) What movement does the author say is "the starting point for all studies of Modernism" and why? How does it "point the way toward the future"? Refer to specific traits or characteristics of the work of the movement. (You have to look closely for these phrases, but they come close together in the same paragraph.)

b) Now look at the 7 traits of Modernism in design in bold on the "113 Modernism Notes" sheet; pick two traits from those 7 that you think could be applied or are at least closely related to this same movement (in answer a)) as the author described it, and explain why/how.

3. britannica - industrial-design

a) Go back to the movement you answered question 2a. with (above); is this same movement mentioned in this industrial design article, and what is the main point the author makes about it?

b) How would you compare what is said about Bauhaus design in this article, with the movement you just referenced in 3a)? Use any characteristics from the 113 Modernism Notes list that apply to this answer, and explain how they are related to the Bauhaus design work.

4. visualarts department - modernism/

a) Look at the book cover design by Jan Tschichold: What characteristics in its design reflect the influence of the Bauhaus, according to the author's explanation? Which Modernist characteristics from the 113 Modernism Notes list are closest to these traits, and why do you say that?

b) Which of the Modernist characteristics on the Notes list is closest or most related to the main point made in the last section (last two paragraphs) of the article? Why do you say that?
