Audience and focus:
You work for a UNDP or other UN agency—perhaps DESA or UN FPA. You are writing a briefing memo about Argintina. You are briefing a delegation of three diplomats who represent their own countries in the UN Commission on Population and Development for their upcoming visit to the country you are following.
Choosing an issue relevant to sustainable development and population dynamics/demographic trends, address these points:
What are the significant population issues affecting the country’s development?
You may identify up to five, but you will concentrate on the most important one
If there are any significant population issues related to human mobility—migration within
the country (rural to urban or otherwise), out of the country, into the country; labor migration? Forced migration? Immigration? Emigration?—mention these, but only the ones that are significant.
How is the issue impacting the country’s development now?
How is it anticipated to affect development in the future?
Is it affecting the whole country’s development, or are their effects mainly felt in a particular region?
What group or groups of people are most affected and how are they affected?
If some groups/demographics are positively affected and others negatively, include both.
What kind of policy could be put in place to maximize its positive effects or minimize/mitigate its negative effects, or both?
This does not have to be a specific policy as in the original assignment; it can be more general
What challenges/barriers exist to maximizing the benefits and/or mitigating the difficulties, e.g., implementation cost, resources, government capacity?
