After you have read John Swales' article, start reading Elizabeth Wardle's article. One of the discourse communities you will be joining very soon is that of your new employer. Answer the following questions about Wardle's article:

1. Drawing on Wardle (whi cited Wenger), what are the three ways that newcomers try to belong in a new community? Give specific examples to illustrate each "mode of belongings." Then consider why a newcomer might choose not to participate in some aspect of a new community.

2. Wardle quotes Hasu and Engestrom as saying that conflict and breakdown can actually be positive, helping to reshape how a community does things in ways that are more productive. However, the conflicts between Alan and his work community did not have positive results. Why do you think this is? How could his conflicts have been handled so that they did result in positive change?
