As you can see from our readings, since the 2016 election, those concerns have largely been eclipsed by concerns with the impact of social media on campaigns. In 2016 and 2020, the Clinton and Biden campaigns respectively greatly outspent the Trump campaign upending the narrative that Republicans were the candidates of "Big Money." Regardless, both limits on campaign financing and the control of so-called "fake news" on social media pose potential First Amendment challenges. Discuss the First Amendment implications of restrictions on political content on social media. Should companies such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon make the decision as to what is or is not appropriate for the public to see/read? Based upon Allcott & Gentzkow's analysis, it appears the problem in 2016 was substantially less than many believed; however, in 2020, concerns led companies to take dramatic actions.
