Case Brief Guidelines You will be given a case to brief following the "IRAC" method with a brief introduction on the facts and procedural history of the case. You should thoroughly read through the case. You are to brief the case using the following format. State the style of the case (name and citation) at the top center of the page.
Facts
• You are to summarize the facts. You are to state only the relevant facts.
Procedural History
• You are to state the procedural history of the case. What court authored the opinion? Is it an appellate court or trial court? If appellate court, what was the decision of the lower court?
Issue
• What is the question at issue in the case? What is the issue before the court? What are the parties asking the court to decide?
Rule
• What are the relevant rule(s) of law in which the court used to make its decision? What law should the court apply to the facts to determine its decision?
Analysis
• How did the court apply the law to facts to make a decision? How does the court interpret the law as it pertains to the specific facts of the case? What was the courts rationale for its decision in your own words (do not merely quote what the court said)?
Conclusion
• What was the court's decision? What is the final outcome?
