Reading the Constitution
While there were many contentious debates at the Convention, even the small stuff was debated, including the qualifications for office. Who is allowed to serve can tell us a lot about how a government is run and who gets a seat at the table. A good way to learn how to read the Constitution, as well as learn how the Framers thought about politics, is to try and find these qualifications in the Constitution itself. For this discussion you will need a copy of the Constitution. For this assignment answer the following questions:
1. What are the term lengths for members of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and for the President? Why are these the term lengths?
2. What is the minimum age requirement for members of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the President? Why these ages?
3. What are the citizenship and residency requirements? Why have such requirements?
4. How many members are there in the House and Senate today, how is this number determined, and how were they chosen originally? What has changed?
It will be a good idea to do some research outside of the Constitution to answer some of these questions. Be sure to cite your sources.
