Part 1:

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

For this module's SLP you are asked to further discuss the extent and the impact of this problem. How often is it encountered? What are its negative consequences? Who is affected by the problem? What could be its implications for the mission and vision of the healthcare organization where the problem occurs?

SLP Assignment Expectations

The objective of the capstone is to conduct research on a relevant issue in health care management, to identify the issues and implications, and to develop a plan to address this issue. Please draw from your exposure to the various issues discussed in the previous courses and from your professional experience. The capstone will give you the opportunity to apply information and skills gained from previous courses (and work experience) and to develop a plan to address a "real world" healthcare issue. You will be expected to provide a scholarly basis for your response. Your opinions should be justified with evidence from the literature. References should be cited properly in the text of your essay, as well as at the end. Several scholarly references should be cited for this assignment. Please limit your response to 3 pages maximum.

Length: This assignment should be between 2-3 pages (500-750 words) in length, excluding references.

References: At least two references should be included from academic sources (e.g. peer-reviewed journal articles).

Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper.

Format: APA format is recommended. While APA formatting of references is not a requirement, the references need to be presented in order using a standard citation style (APA, AMA, MLA etc). When material is copied verbatim from external sources, it MUST be enclosed in quotes. The references should be cited within the text and also listed at the end of the assignment in the References section. See Syllabus page for more information on APA format.

Case Assignment

For this case your are asked to identify potential causes for the problem you began addressing in module 1, critically analyze the causes and explain how you would go about assessing these causes in the context of a specific organization. Again, you are asked to refer to practice but also integrate literature that deals with this issue and the knowledge you acquired in the previous courses in the BSHS program.

For this case please discuss financial implications of the problem. How would you look at these in the context of an organization? What does the literature say?

Many complex problems facing today's healthcare managers have a financial, legal, and ethical implications for their organization. Identify a legitimate healthcare problem, and then identify and discuss the financial, legal, and ethical implications associated with the problem. Which implication (i.e., financial, ethical, or legal) is the most important and why? Which is the least important and why?

Module 3 - SLP

In BHS365, you were introduced to the concept of critical thinking, and were tasked with applying the first two steps in the process. In BHS414, you reinforced the concepts and steps applied in BHS365, by having you again apply those early steps, but then take the process one step further.

Identify and clarify an ethical dilemma associated with the chosen topic of your course project. To achieve this, the students will be expected to gather and evaluate relevant information (e.g., peer review and credible sources). Furthermore, the students will be asked to consider alternatives for addressing the dilemma and the implications of each. Finally, the students will be expected to choose and most appropriate alternative and describe its proposed implementation.

Once a management official understands the causal factors associated with a problem, it is time to identify and explore possible (feasible) solutions. However, there are managers who have a tendency to singularly focus on a particular solution to a problem and give little or no consideration to other viable alternatives. This is likely due to the manager's belief that he or she fully understands the nature and scope of the problem and what the correct course of action should be. This decision is typically without having analyzed the causal factors associated with the problem at hand.

Once a solution has been decided, it is time to plan its implementation. One of the keys to a successful solution implementation is the anticipation of those barriers or obstacles which are likely to occur as the plan is rolled out. For instance, barriers might result from conflicting organizational priorities; limited resources (finances, personnel, equipment, supplies, etc.); economic constraints; internal politics; personnel resistance; and so forth. Through the thoughtful consideration of potential barriers, health care managers can be better prepared to deal with these obstacles should they present themselves.

Provide background information on a problem you identified and weren't able to successful resolve; the solution which was ultimately implemented to address the problem, but was unsuccessful; the obstacles you "anticipated" experiencing while rolling out the planned solution; the obstacles you "actually" experienced while rolling out the planned solution; how you overcame or failed to overcome the obstacles; and the ultimate outcome of your planned solution.
