World War I Propaganda
1. During World War 1, nations produced a variety of propaganda designed to raise money, mobilize the citizenry, and rally public opinion behind war efforts.
2. "Othering" was one key part of this. To make the war make sense, nations used propaganda to show how the enemy was dangerous and different. This is what scholars call "othering."
3. The purpose of this assignment, then, is to 1.) better understand how propaganda worked and 2.) consider "othering" and how nations used it to inspire their citizens to kill enemies in war and mobilize populations.
4. Looking at some examples available in the PowerPoint, we once again need to think like historians and do some detective work to answer the following questions in a 400-word post:
A. What are governments asking of their populations, and what tactics are used to mobilize populations?
B. Othering: What traits and characteristics are the enemies given? Make sure you have at least three specific references. [see list below for ideas]
C. Othering: What traits and characteristics are given to the home nation (fellow countrymen)? Make sure you have at least three specific references. [see list below for ideas]
D. Do you think this type of propaganda would be effective today? Why or why not?
For traits and characteristics, you should study these images carefully:
• Think about what the artist was trying to say
• How the enemy is presented (or suggested)
• What is the enemy doing or capable of doing?
• Facial expressions
• Facial features
• Colors
• Poses
• Imaginary/fantastic/absurd features
• Attitudes
5. Then respond to a classmate with a 150-word post.
