Assignment:
Interpersonal racism (or individual racism), is often expressed through discrimination, stereotypes, and/or microaggressions. These expressions are maintained or fueled by the existence institutional racism. In other words, these two contexts of racism work hand in hand to not only keep each others alive but to contribute to issues such as education disparities.
The concept of de facto segregation was discussed in our textbook, along with how it played a role in the economic segregation of schools. Children from middle-class and upper-class families attended largely white suburban schools, while children from lower-class families attended racially mixed urban schools (Leon-Guerrero, 2021). The concept shows how differences in Hispanic/Latinx educational attainment have been reinforced by institutional racism based on economic status.
This structure of institutional racism influences interpersonal racism as well. For example, stereotypes are born from the idea of de facto segregation which can affect how Hispanic/Latinx students are treated in academic settings, potentially discouraging them from pursuing or completing higher education. Additionally, Hispanic/Latinx students might face small discriminatory comments or behaviors from classmates and/or teachers. These may promote an environment that is dismissive which makes it more difficult for students to feel like they belong in educational settings.
Overall, I think it's important to combat these issues by educating everyone, students and staff, about institutional and interpersonal racism so that a more welcoming and encouraging environment is created. I think schools can also implement more helping services such as tutoring and mental health services so that students have outlets that can boost their motivation when they may feel discouraged due to interpersonal racism. Lastly, when it comes to de facto segregation, I think government officials and policymakers can combat this by firstly understanding where de facto segregation comes from, then acting to lessen it.
Discussion Questions
1. This discussion asked us how institutional and interpersonal racism applied to education disparities among Hispanic/Latinx students. In what ways do institutional racism and individual racism differ in their impact on other racial and ethnic minorities?
2. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the functionalist perspective on racial and ethnic assimilation, particularly in the context of the United States' "melting pot" ideal?
