A two post in ground car lift uses compressed air to force water under two aluminum pistons that move in unison (both pistons at same elevation) to raise and lower the vehicles.
The lift has a total capacity of 8,000 lbs. Each piston has a diameter of 10.5 inches.
a) Neglecting the weight of the pistons, what air pressure, in psig, is needed to raise the maximum capacity?
b) Assume that each aluminum piston is 60 inches long, and is lubricated with a 0.06 inch thick layer of water between the piston and the stationary piston encasement. Also assume the dynamic viscosity of water is 2.7X10E-5 lbf-s/ft^2. What additional air pressure, in psig, is needed to overcome the shear force that is produced when raising the vehicle at 0.1 ft/s?
c) Assume the lubricating fluid is changed to oil with a dynamic viscosity of 1.4X10E-3 lbf-s/ft^2. Now what air pressure, in psig, is required to overcome shear force ? Use the same lift rate of 0.1 ft/sec.
If rod slides along the horizontal slot with a velocity of 44 ft/s , determine the angular velocity of link BC at the instant
A steel plate which is 1.5 m by 1.5 m and 30 mm thick is lifted by four cables attached to its corners that meet at a point that is 2 m above the plate. Determine the required cross sectional area of the cables
How are compacted and loose bulk density used in real life. Also is a high degree of accuracy necessary in the bulk density tests
The cart has a velocity of 4 ft/sec to the right. Determine the angular speed N of the wheel so that point A on the top of the rim has a velocity (a) equal to 4 ft/sec to the left, (b) equal to zero, and (c) equal to 8 ft/sec to the right
A stream with a flow of 22 mgd contains 180 mg/L of sodium cyanide in the form of NaCN. Chlorine can be added to destroy the NaCN waste according to the reaction shown below. Find the theoretical minimum amount of chlorine required (in lb/day).
Our laboratory plans to use one, 10-liter tank of refrigerant 134a every week. So off you go to check the cost of fill-ups at the two possible suppliers. At Chem Mart, the filled tank is returned to you at 10 bar and 90 C for $10.00.
You plan to use a tank of total volume V= 10 m3 to remove a contaminant at concentration Cin = 1 g/m3 from a waste stream with a flow rate of Q = 1 m3/h. The reaction is first order with a rate constant k1 = 0.5 h-1.
Calculate the overall modulus of the composite, explaining your calculations and the assumptions you have made when it is loaded:
Using the stress transformation equations only, given a stress state where sigma x=105 MPa,sigma y=75 MPa and tau xy=25 MPa, determine the stresses acting on an element oriented at an angle 40 degrees from the x axis.
Wastewater flow is 80 gpcd with 170 mg/l BOD and 190 mg/l suspended solids. Size the extended aeration basin and clarifier using the minimum detention time and overflow rates. Calculate the average F/M using an MLSS of 1000 mg/l.
After initial mixing, the DO concentration in the river is 9.5mg/L and the temperature is 15ºC. If the ultimate BOD of the mixed river water is 30mg/L,
